Adelaide, March 14 – Promising Bernardini (USA) colt Burgundy Blast has been off the scene since September of last year but indicated with a stylish win on Saturday at Morphettville that he’s back and ready to step up to the next level.
Trained by Leon McDonald and Andrew Gluyas, Burgundy Blast was sent out favourite for the 1000 metre sprint and surged clear to win by three-quarters of a length, his third win from just four starts.
Bred by renowned breeder Harry Perks and retained to race in partnership with a big group of owners, Burgundy Blast was raised at Mill Park and is the first living foal of metropolitan winning Redoute’s Choice mare Choice of Colours.
She comes from the family of Group II winner Excited Angel, Group III winner Typhoon and stakes-winners Aquiver and Prayerful, while her first two dams are by Golden Slipper winners Marscay and Vain, so it’s a female family with plenty of speed.
Mill Park sold the current yearling from Choice of Colours, a colt by Epsom Derby winner New Approach (IRE), for $65,000 to Mark Kavanagh at the 2015 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale.
Choice of Colours has a colt foal by Rebel Raider and was covered by Burgundy Blast’s sire Bernardini last spring.
