Adelaide, April 18 - Yet another successful graduate from South Australia’s leading nursery Mill Park, Daytona Grey scored a clear-cut two and a half-length success in the 2015 renewal of the Group III SAJC RN Irwin Stakes at Morphettville on Saturday.
Suited by a rain-affected surface, the Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas trained Daytona Grey trailed five of his six rivals in the early-to-middle stages of the competitive assignment and was still in arrears at the top of the straight.
However, the closing 300 metres of the contest witnessed the seasoned son of Artie Schiller (USA) cut a swathe through the field before going on to record a well-deserved maiden black-type victory.
From the second Australian-bred crop of Artie Schiller, Daytona Grey was a $65,000 Magic Millions Adelaide purchase for his trainers from the Mill Park draft and has now won nine of his 31 career starts and over $368,420 in prizemoney.
The 5-year-old is one of five individual winners to have been produced by the four-time Sydney metropolitan winning mare Southern Rose, but is her first to earn black-type.
Mill Park sold the current yearling from Southern Rose, a filly by Dream Ahead (USA) for $52,000 at the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale this year to Mark Kavanagh and Southern Rose was covered last spring by Rebel Raider.
