July 22 - Renowned South Australian breeder Harry Perks has bred Group I winning fillies and mares by some left of centre US bred sires and produced an interesting winner at Balaklava on Wednesday by Lookin at Lucky (USA) in Beluga Blue.
Perks bred stars such as Southern Speed (Caulfield Cup) by Southern Image (USA), Devil Moon (Turnbull Stakes) by King Cugat (USA) and Go Indy Go (AJC Champagne Stakes) by Bernardini (USA) have made Mr Perks a widely respected figure in the bloodstock world.
Prepared by Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas, two year-old filly Beluga Blue bounced back from an unplaced debut on July 11 to score a strong length win over 1415 metres.
Consigned for sale by Mill Park at the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale, Beluga Blue made $100,000 to the bid of Leon Macdonald and runs for a syndicate of owners that includes her breeder Harry Perks.
A half-sister to talented winner Burgundy Blast, she is the second foal of Choice of Colours, a metro winning Redoute’s Choice mare from the family of Group winners Excited Angel, Typhoon and more recently Text’n Hurley and Delago’s Secret.
Choice of Colours has colts to follow by New Approach (IRE) and Rebel Raider and was covered last spring by Bernardini (USA).
A Champion US Two and Three Year Old by Smart Strike, Lookin at Lucky shuttled to Coolmore Australia for just one season and Beluga Blue is his third Australian winner.
