Fresh from a juvenile quinella at Morphettville on Saturday, Mill Park Stud’s raised and sold two-year-olds were once again back in the news, this time with the Robbie Griffiths-trained Flying Geepee at Pakenham on Sunday.
Sold through the Mill Park Stud draft at the 2014 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale to his trainer for $40,000, Flying Geepee is by the now retired Champion Sire Flying Spur, out of the American bred Unbridled’s Song mare Registered Nurse, herself a half-sister to Group 3 winner Beauty Parlor, and the Listed winner The Brothers War.
Settling just off the pace on the outside in fifth position after getting away well from the gates, jockey Jye McNeil was one of the first to make his move, calling on his mount and taking off before the home turn.
Tackling Godolphin’s Cruachan as they headed into the home straight, Flying Geepee got the better of the favoured runner, surging clear to break his maiden in style, winning by a length.
While still slightly green down the home straight, the impressive performance is indicative of a horse with talent and with a pedigree suggesting he will appreciate further, it clearly shows that the best is still to come.
