The Listed MVRC Abell Stakes at Moonnee Valley on Friday night went the way of track specialist Reldas, an $82,000 Inglis Premier purchase for Cameron Cooke Bloodstock from the draft of Mill Park.
The Robert Smerdon trained son of Testa Rossa had posted four previous wins at the track and was a close up fifth at his last start in the Group 1 MRC Oakleigh Plate.
Jockey Mark Zahra was able to get Reldas into a midfield position behind the early leader Exclusive Lass before easing him into the clear three-wide rounding the final turn.
Reldas powered to the line to win the 1200 metre sprint by a length and a half to claim his first Black Type success
"He jumped well and usually he can get a bit far back but I was able to lob on the leader’s back without spending too much energy,” Zahra said.
"They didn’t go quick so he didn’t get that far back because he drew a gate and I didn’t have to push him.”
"With 59.5(kg), he was able to travel a long way which helps.
"The gaps came at the right time.”
Bred by Mill Park in partnership, Reldas has won seven races and placed seven times from 22 starst earning $332,290 in prizemoney.
He is a half-brother to brilliant stakes-winner Victory Chant and is one of three winners from Classic Status, a half-sister by Marscay to Group I MRC Thousand Guineas winner Serious Speed and to the dam of Group II winner Majestic Music.
Classic Status has a yearling colt by Helmet that was sold by Mill Park at Magic Millions for $170,000 to Phillip Stokes.
